AVARUA & TEREORA WIN the SCHOOLS RUGBY 7’s

Ten teams participated in this one-day U13 & U15 Rugby 7’s tournament, kindly sponsored by the Cook Islands Printing Services (“CIPS”).

U13 Grade - Boys: Avarua School getting better with every game. Best players per school were: pivot Taio Taio(Avarua School), utility Vaipo Mataora & Alfy Ngire(Nikao), forward Heath Heather & outside back Simona Ataera(Arorangi School) and winger Terry Akava (Nukutere College) - who scored 4 tries in this tournament.

U15 Grade – Boys: Again Tereora College improving as the day progressed. Best players on the day were; pivot William Rani and Taua Heather(Tereora), speedster Taine Rimamotu(Nukutere) and outside back Thomas Daniel(Titikaveka) who scored 4 tries in the match against Nukutere College.

U15 Grade – Girls: Although Tereora College won this division a  real surprise package were Nukutere College girls who also improved with more game time. Titikaveka College struggled as a team but they did put in a spirited performance throughout the day – exemplified especially by their winger Trainee Daniels who chased down a runaway Nukutere College student from 80meres and was able to knock the rugby ball out of the Nukutere players hand as she went to press the ball over the try line – this was after the fulltime siren had sounded!  Best players for Tereora College were; fleet-footed  winger Elma Ngametua, halfback Ngametua Taringa, Nukutere College – tryscoring winger Joan Wong, utility players Dora Iripa and Tereita Teinaki.  Titikaveka College – utility players Bernice Trego and Lily Williams worked hard all day.

Overall it was a good event with lots of talented players, boys and girls, on show.

With Rugby 7’s now an Olympic sport this bodes well for the code of Rugby 7’s as CIRU look to develop competition pathways from home.

Thank you to our sponsors Cook Islands Printing Services, Avatiu Rugby Club for the use of their marvellous facilities and to all the schools who participated.
